Connie Causer, Psy.D.

Dr. Causer is a licensed clinical psychologist who works with adolescents, adults, parents, couples, and families. She provides in-person and telehealth therapy, as well as psychological evaluations. Her specialty is working with individuals who have experienced trauma, helping clients process and heal from difficult experiences while developing the skills, confidence, and resilience needed to live a fulfilling life beyond their trauma.

Dr. Causer takes an integrative, strength-based, trauma-informed, and holistic approach to therapy. She believes that healing is not simply about moving past what has happened, but about helping individuals reconnect with themselves, strengthen their relationships, and create a meaningful life that is not defined by their traumatic experiences.

Education & Training

Dr. Causer completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology at Virginia State University, followed by a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Howard University. She earned her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from The Chicago School.

Dr. Causer completed her doctoral internship at the Atlanta Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where she provided clinical services to veterans experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, substance misuse, and personality disorders. During her internship, she gained experience using evidence-based trauma treatments, including Prolonged Exposure (PE), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Written Exposure Therapy (WET). She also co-facilitated substance use treatment groups and conducted psychological and neuropsychological evaluations.

A Collaborative Approach to Healing

Dr. Causer believes that meaningful therapy begins with a strong therapeutic alliance. She strives to meet each individual, couple, and family where they are, creating a compassionate, safe, and nonjudgmental space where clients feel heard, respected, and understood. She views therapy as a partnership in which clients are active participants in identifying their goals, understanding their experiences, and developing practical tools to support meaningful change.

Dr. Causer recognizes that there is no single path to healing. She works alongside clients to identify approaches that fit their individual needs, values, strengths, and goals. Her clinical approach incorporates evidence-based interventions while remaining flexible and responsive to each client’s experiences.

When working with couples and families, Dr. Causer emphasizes open communication, mutual understanding, and ensuring that each person has an opportunity to feel heard. She recognizes that relationships can bring both connection and challenges and works with couples and families to better understand patterns of interaction, strengthen relationships, and develop healthier ways of communicating and coping.

Clinical Experience

Dr. Causer has provided clinical services across inpatient, community, and forensic settings. Her experience includes working with individuals and groups navigating depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, suicidal ideation, self-harm, personality disorders, psychotic symptoms, substance misuse, disordered eating, relationship and family concerns, social stressors, and trauma.

Her clinical work incorporates approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), mindfulness, and Family Systems interventions. She also has specialized experience utilizing trauma-focused interventions, including Prolonged Exposure (PE), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Written Exposure Therapy (WET).

Psychological Evaluations

In addition to therapy, Dr. Causer has a particular interest in psychological evaluations and enjoys helping individuals and families gain greater diagnostic clarity. She views the evaluation process as an opportunity to help clients better understand their strengths, challenges, and individual needs. Through thoughtful assessment, feedback, and practical recommendations, Dr. Causer aims to help clients and their support systems develop a clearer understanding of their experiences and make informed decisions about treatment, education, and other areas of functioning.

Beyond the Trauma

Dr. Causer is committed to promoting mental wellness, resilience, and social justice. She believes that psychoeducation can reduce stigma and empower individuals and families to better understand their experiences and seek support without judgment.

At the heart of her work is the belief that a traumatic experience can be a part of someone’s story without defining who they are or the life they are able to build. Dr. Causer is dedicated to helping clients heal, develop effective coping tools, strengthen their relationships, and move toward a life that feels meaningful and fulfilling. Her goal is to support clients not only in healing from what they have experienced, but also in discovering who they are and what is possible for them beyond the trauma.
