Katherine S. Spencer, Psy.D.
Dr. Katherine (Katie) Spencer is a Pediatric Psychologist who provides assessment and therapy for children, adolescents, and families coping with acute and chronic medical conditions, stress, and related emotional, behavioral, and developmental disorders. Dr. Spencer is also a National Board Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist (NBCCH). She provides cognitive-behavioral therapy, clinical hypnotherapy, biofeedback and stress management training, parent/family training, and behavioral medicine consultation.
Dr. Spencer is an Atlanta-area native who completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology at Vanderbilt University and her M.A. and Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Georgia School of Professional Psychology. She trained at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and completed her residency at the Kennedy Krieger Institute/ Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD. She worked as a Pain Psychologist at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, where she developed a pain psychology consultation service for individuals undergoing intensive rehabilitation for spinal cord and brain injuries. Dr. Spencer is currently on staff at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
Dr. Spencer specializes in treating anxiety and adjustment disorders, sleep disorders, chronic pain, headaches, psychosomatic conditions, GI disorders, children’s eating problems, and problems adhering to medical regimens (i.e., pill swallowing, diets, injections). She helps children and families better understand the complex interactions between medical symptoms, stress, and overall functioning (i.e., school/work, social, family, sports). Using clinical hypnotherapy, Dr. Spencer has been able to help children and young adults who are feeling stuck, sometimes after years or more of psychotherapy, to move forward toward a better quality of life. She is available to collaborate with your other medical providers and school/workplace for the most integrated behavioral care.
She is a member of The American Psychological Association, Society of Pediatric Psychology, National Board for Certified Clinical Hypnotherapists, and Georgia Psychological Association. She has been involved with several research projects, presented posters at national and international conferences, and co-written psychology publications. Dr. Spencer is also available for presentations on topics specific to her areas of expertise.
